    Visas & Length of Stay

Georgia welcomes over 100 nationalities without a visa — for up to a full year.

Georgia enforces a highly welcoming visa policy, allowing citizens of over 100 countries and territories to enter and remain in the country without a visa for up to one full year (365 days) within any rolling 12-month period.

This policy applies to all European Union member states, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation, among others.

Under this regime, no registration with local authorities is required during the 365 days, and travelers are permitted to reside and work remotely.

Foreign nationals who do not qualify for the visa-free regime must secure an electronic visa (e-visa) prior to their arrival. The official e-visa application must be processed exclusively through the government portal at www.evisa.gov.ge.

The standard e-visa is typically processed within five working days and grants a short-term stay of either 30 or 90 days depending on nationality.

Border crossings, including major land checkpoints such as Lars-Kazbegi (Russian border), Sarpi (Turkish border), and Sadakhlo (Armenian border), operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Official verification of country-specific visa exemptions and regulations can be cross-referenced via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia portal at www.geoconsul.gov.ge.

    Required Travel Documents

Every foreign traveler entering Georgia must present a valid international passport at the border checkpoint. The passport must satisfy the following statutory conditions:

    • It must remain valid for at least one month beyond the traveler's intended date of departure from Georgia.
    • It must contain at least two blank pages to accommodate official entry and exit stamps.
    • It must be free of critical physical damage or unauthorized alterations.

While border officials routinely process visa-free entries with minimal questioning, they reserve the legal right under state immigration law to demand supporting documentation regarding the purpose and logistics of the visit. Travelers are advised to hold printed or verifiable digital copies of the following documents:

    • Proof of Accommodation: A confirmed hotel booking, rental agreement, or a formal invitation letter containing the full name, national ID, address, and telephone number of the host residing in Georgia.
    • Financial Sufficiency: Evidence of adequate financial means to support the duration of the stay. The generally accepted guideline used by border control is an amount equivalent to approximately $50 USD per person per day, demonstrable via cash, active credit cards, or recent bank statements.
    • Onward Travel: A confirmed return flight, bus, or train ticket validating an intent to exit the country before the legal period of stay expires.

For individuals entering via land borders in a personal vehicle, the driver must present a valid national or international driving license, original vehicle registration documents, and mandatory local third-party auto insurance. In accordance with Georgian law, foreign-registered vehicles must be insured through the Compulsory Insurance Center, with policies available for purchase in advance at www.tpl.ge or at designated border terminals.

    Customs & Declaration Rules

The Revenue Service of Georgia enforces strict customs regulations regarding the import and export of currencies, personal goods, and restricted substances. Failure to comply with these rules results in financial penalties, confiscation, or legal prosecution.

    • Cash & Securities: There is no limit on the total amount imported. Mandatory declaration is required if the total value equals or exceeds 30,000 GEL (or its equivalent in foreign currency).
    • Personal Luggage: Up to 30 kg of personal items is allowed for individual, non-commercial use. Goods exceeding 30 kg or intended for sale are subject to standard import duties.
    • Tobacco Products: Duty-free allowance covers up to 200 cigarettes, OR 50 cigarillos, OR 50 cigars, OR 250 grams of loose tobacco. Quantities exceeding these limits will be confiscated.
    • Alcoholic Beverages: Up to 4 liters of any type of alcohol is permitted per adult traveler. Quantities exceeding 4 liters are subject to import taxes and strict regulations.

The import of narcotics, psychotropic substances, explosives, and weapons without state-issued permits is prohibited. The import of specialized equipment, such as commercial drones or high-frequency communication devices, requires prior authorization from the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency. Complete regulatory manuals and digital declaration forms are hosted on the official Revenue Service portal at www.rs.ge.

    Health & Mandatory Insurance

As mandated by state regulations, all foreign citizens traveling to Georgia are legally required to hold valid international travel health insurance covering the entire duration of their stay. The insurance policy must meet the following criteria:

    • Explicitly provide coverage for emergency medical treatment and sudden illnesses.
    • Cover expenses related to inpatient hospitalization and medical evacuation or repatriation.
    • Be issued by an authorized insurance provider, with the policy document available in English, Georgian, or Russian.

Border control personnel are legally authorized to inspect insurance policies upon entry. Travelers lacking proper coverage may be denied entry or fined in accordance with local regulations. There are currently no mandatory vaccination certificates required for general tourists, unless arriving from active yellow fever transmission zones. In the event of a medical or safety emergency within the territory of Georgia, travelers can dial 112 from any mobile or landline network. This is a centralized, free emergency service operating 24/7 that connects callers to the ambulance, police, and fire departments, with English-speaking operators available. Georgia maintains exceptionally stringent laws regarding the importation of medications. Many standard over-the-counter painkillers, cough syrups, and anxiety medications containing substances such as codeine, pseudoephedrine, or phenobarbital are classified as controlled psychotropic drugs. To import personal daily prescriptions legally, a traveler must possess a formal doctor's prescription detailing the generic drug name, daily dosage, and exact duration of treatment, accompanied by a certified English translation. Detailed compliance procedures are outlined by the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia at www.moh.gov.ge.

    Special Cases (Minors & Pets)

Specific legal frameworks govern the entry of underage children and domestic animals into the territory of Georgia:

    • Minors: Every child entering Georgia must possess an individual valid international passport. If a minor is traveling accompanied by only one parent, or with a third-party legal guardian, border authorities reserve the right to request a notarized power of attorney containing written consent from the non-accompanying parent(s). This document should be legally translated into English or Georgian.
    • Pets: To import domestic dogs or cats, the animal must be microchipped and accompanied by an international veterinary passport. The documentation must verify a valid rabies vaccination administered at least 30 days and no more than one year prior to the arrival date. Additionally, a veterinary health certificate must be issued by an authorized state veterinary agency in the country of departure within 10 days of crossing the Georgian border.

        Georgian Feast

        A Feast for All Senses

Georgian cuisine is not just food — it's a ritual. Every dish tells a story of ancient traditions, mountain herbs, and sun-drenched valleys. From the buttery richness of khachapuri to the tangy warmth of khinkali soup, each bite is a journey through Georgia's diverse landscapes. The secret lies in the soil — fertile, volcanic, and kissed by the Black Sea breeze. Local cheeses, fresh greens, and wild spices turn every meal into a celebration. And of course, no feast is complete without qvevri wine — aged in clay vessels buried underground for thousands of years.

        Taste the Regions

Every corner of Georgia has its own culinary signature. In Kakheti, they bake shotis puri — a crispy boat-shaped bread served with cheese. In Samegrelo, they cook kharcho — a rich beef soup with walnuts and garlic. Adjara gives us adjarian khachapuri — a cheese-filled pastry with a buttery egg on top. And Svaneti is famous for its smoked meats and salt blends with wild herbs. Whether you're dining in a chic Tbilisi restaurant or a remote mountain guesthouse, you'll taste authenticity, warmth, and the soul of Georgia itself.
